Banda Islands is more than just a historical landmark; it is a living testament to resilience, now pulsing with the energy of a new generation. Join this special edition of Shareveling, where we collaborate with Jalin Mimpi and Generasi Warna Warni to make a tangible impact on the future of education for the children of Banda.
Jalin Mimpi provides free education and nutritious meals to children in Jakarta and Bali, as well as volunteer travel programs to further destinations such as Sumba, and now, Maluku.
Generasi Warna Warni provides free after-school activities (literacy, arts, sports) to K12 students of Banda Neira. You will teach the children English as well as conduct a skill-sharing activity with the foundation’s existing staffers.
Trips depart every Thursday from Ambon Islands with a min. 2 and max. 5 participants. Return to Ambon will be the following Monday or Tuesday depending on flight availability.

Day 1: Crossing to the Heart of the Spices
We meet in Ambon (Airport or Tulehu Port) at 08:00. We’ll cross the legendary Banda Sea via fastboat (approx. 4-5 hours). Upon arrival in Banda Neira, we check into the historic Hotel Maulana, where colonial heritage meets the sea.
Day 2 – 4: Exploring Banda & Working with Warna Warni
Mornings are dedicated to the physical and historical spirit of the islands:
- Island Hopping: Trekking the majestic Great Volcano (Gunung Api) and visiting Sjahrir Island.
- Colonial Footprints: Exploring Fort Belgica, the 17th-century VOC fortress overlooking the volcano, and the historical Banda Neira town, VOC’s first capital in Indonesia.
- The Spice Legacy: Tours of the nutmeg plantations of Banda Besar and cooking classes with local chefs
Afternoons are dedicated to working with the Warna Warni community. The activities include:
- Teaching English: On Fridays and Sundays, Warna Warni runs various classes including: language (english and bahasa), music, visual arts, and sports. Volunteers will be asked to teach in one of these classes. Materials will be provided.
- Skill Sharing Session: Volunteers are also expected to host a skill sharing session (according to their skills and capabilities) with the foundation’s existing staffers, all of whom are also local volunteers.
Day 5-6: Deepening Bonds
Our final days is for reflection and preparing for the return to Ambon by air either on Day 5 or 6 depending on availability.

- Transportation schedule and options to/from Banda Islands, as well as day to day itinerary is subject to changes according to local conditions
- While we will try our best to adjust and provide alternative itinerary, we recommend participants to purchase refundable airline tickets and travel insurance
