Just east of Ambon Island, the Lease Islands offer a remarkable combination of natural beauty and rich historical heritage. On Saparua Island, the imposing Duurstede Fort still stands as a reminder of Kapitan Pattimura’s struggle. Meanwhile, Nusalaut Island, known among diving enthusiasts, is the birthplace of Martha Christina Tiahahu. Today, these two islands are at the heart of Heka Leka’s efforts to support education and create learning opportunities for children.

Our main initiative is the Island Literacy Program, which introduces child-friendly library spaces in elementary schools across the Lease Islands. We also continue to advocate for the importance of early childhood education through the Lounno Early Childhood Education pilot program (PAUD Lounno).

In addition, Baileo Heka Leka serves as a co-learning space for the community in Paperu Village. A variety of activities take place here, including English classes, educational film screenings, educational games, reading sessions, and other learning activities.

Departure dates

On the first day, you will be picked up from your hotel in Ambon at 7:00 a.m. On the final day, you will arrive back in Ambon shortly before lunchtime.

Track 1: Historical Trail

Traces of Captain Pattimura’s struggle in Saparua
1. Duurstede Fort, a VOC fort (1676–1691) on a coral hill, captured by the people of Saparua under Pattimura on May 16, 1817. It is now a historical site and sunset spot.
2. Diorama Building, a collection of miniature historical depictions of the Pattimura War, near Duurstede Fort.
3. Kapitan Pattimura’s House, the home of Pattimura’s descendants in Haria Village, houses the captain’s relics (war attire, machetes, letters, and family tree).

Track 2: Discovering Local Traditions

Traditional crafts and culinary delights passed down through generations
1. Sago Processing: the process of tapping and pressing sago stems into flour, the basic ingredient for the traditional food, papeda.
2. Sempe Making: a clay pottery craft typical of Ouw Village, a traditional container for papeda.
3. Brown Sugar Making: the process of making brown sugar, a specialty of Tuhaha Village, by tapping the sap and then cooking it into solid brown sugar.
4. Brown Sugar Sago Making: sago flour, grated coconut, and brown sugar are baked together in a “porna” mold.

Track 3: Lease Beach Hopping

Explore the beaches and small islands around Saparua
1. Kulur Beach, a quiet, white-sand beach, a favorite for sunsets.
2. Haria Beach, a beach near the arrival port for boats from Ambon.
3. Molana Island, a small, uninhabited island with clear waters, perfect for marine activities: snorkeling and diving.
4. Paperu (Mangrove) Beach, a mangrove forest spot.
5. Nusalaut Island, a neighboring island with an ancient village, diving spots, and historical traces of local heroine Martha Christina Tiahahu.

Track 4: Activities with the Community

On this track, we will specifically explore Heka Leka’s programs and engage in activities with the community
1. Child-Friendly Library. Here, you will participate in creative activities such as drawing classes, interactive storytelling sessions, and reading guidance (Book Corner Mentoring) with English story books.
2. Baileo Heka Leka, a co-learning center located in Paperu Village, helps village children learn to speak English and exchange cultural experiences through games from their hometowns and traditional Maluku games.
3. Heka Leka Athletic: An athlete club sponsored by the Heka Leka Foundation. Here, you will meet young athletes, participate in fun activities together, and share motivational stories about sportsmanship.

  • A non-refundable deposit of IDR 1,000,000 is required upon registration to confirm your reservation
